The popular manga “My Wife Has No Emotion” by Jiro Sugiura is set for TV anime adaptation, scheduled to air from July 2024 on TOKYO MX, MBS, and BS Asahi. The protagonist Takuma will be voiced by Toshiyuki Toyonaga, and the robot Mina will be played by Yoshimasa Hosoya.
“My Wife Has No Emotion,” a popular manga by Jiro Sugiura, is currently being serialized in “Monthly Comic Flapper” (published by KADOKAWA). It is a heartwarming story about Kosugi Takuma, a salaryman living alone in his third year, and Mina, a domestic robot supposed to be devoid of emotions. The manga has captured hearts and was ranked sixth in the “Next Manga Award 2022” Comics Division, quickly becoming a topic of discussion on social media right after its release and drawing attention.
With the announcement of the TV anime adaptation, a teaser visual and the main cast have been revealed. The teaser visual features the domestic robot “Mina,” who at a glance appears human but upon closer inspection, has a neck and hands made of metal. She is seen standing in the corner of a room, dressed in an apron, and staring intently ahead while being charged from a wall outlet.
Toshiyuki Toyonaga, known for his roles as Popp in “Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai” and Yuuri Katsuki in “YURI!!! on ICE” among other popular characters, will voice Takuma. The robot Mina will be voiced by the rising voice actor Yoshimasa Hosoya, who made his first leading role in the anime “Do It Yourself!! -Do It Yourself-” (as Yua Serufu) in 2022, and also appeared in “Umamusume Pretty Derby Season 3” (as Copano Rickey).
The anime will be directed by Fumihiko Yoshimura, known for his delicate portrayal of emotions in “The Quintessential Quintuplets” and “I Want to Eat Your Pancreas,” with series composition by Hiroki Uchida (known for “Rent-A-Girlfriend” and the “New Prince of Tennis” series among others), character design by Zenjirou Ukulele (animation director for “NARUTO” and “Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie” among others), and animation production by Tezuka Productions. Known for integrating science fiction into reality as seen in Tezuka works like “Astro Boy” and “Black Jack,” and recently for their skill in depicting adorable characters in “Adachi and Shimamura,” “The Quintessential Quintuplets,” and “Girlfriend, Girlfriend,” Tezuka Productions aims to captivatingly depict a heroine who is supposed to be emotionless but somehow endearing.
Character design sketches for Takuma and Mina have also been released.
Comments from the staff and voice actors have arrived. Original creator Jiro Sugiura mentioned the scope of the anime adaptation, saying, “The story takes a bit of a turn midway through, but since the anime will cover the story up until that turn, I think you can watch it as a rom-com with peace of mind.” Director Fumihiko Yoshimura expressed his commitment, stating, “This work is hard SF. The major theme presented by Mr. Sugiura is challenging, and while there is anxiety about how far we can express it, all we can do is give it our all.” Toshiyuki Toyonaga, who voices Takuma Kosugi, shared his impressions of the original work: “It’s a very strange but not unpleasant feeling, making you feel kindly even towards inanimate objects. It’s that kind of work.” Yoshimasa Hosoya, who plays Mina, showed his enthusiasm by saying, “Though Mina is supposed to be a robot that feels hard and emotionless when touched, I’ll do my best to convey her warmth and cuteness to everyone.”
At “AnimeJapan 2024,” the world’s largest anime event held at Tokyo Big Sight on March 23 (Saturday) and 24 (Sunday), 2024, there are plans for a cast talk event at the Nikkatsu booth and the TOKYO MX booth, and a special exhibition at the TMS booth where visitors can interact with the domestic robot Mina.
Furthermore, to celebrate the anime adaptation announcement of “My Wife Has No Emotion,” a giveaway campaign is being held where followers of the anime’s official X (formerly Twitter) account who repost the designated post can win a robotic vacuum cleaner Roomba and noise-canceling wireless headphones.
There are many works featuring robots or androids as objects of romance, but how human or non-human those robots are significantly influences the taste of the work. Whether you’re a fan of the original work or have just learned about it, we invite you to pay attention to the story depicted in the anime “My Wife Has No Emotion.”
Comment from Jiro Sugiura, the Original Creator:
I never thought I would have the opportunity to see my work animated in my life, so I am truly delighted that “My Wife Has No Emotion” is being turned into an anime. Since it’s a long-running series, I wanted to try various stories, and although the story changes a bit in the middle, the anime will cover the story up until that change, so you can watch it as a rom-com with peace of mind. Thank you very much!
Comment from Fumihiko Yoshimura, Director:
This work is hard science fiction. While the fun world of everyday rom-com and interspecies slapstick unfolds from the pages spun by Mr. Sugiura, we are being deceived. At its core, it unravels the emotions that people have begun to forget in their lives, through communication with a cute domestic robot. With this adaptation, there’s anxiety about how far we can express the major theme Mr. Sugiura has presented, but all we can do is give it our all.
Comment from Toshiyuki Toyonaga (Voice of Kosugi Takuma):
“My Wife Has No Emotion,” as the title suggests, is a work depicting life with a robot, which can be heartwarming, surreal, and sometimes moves the heart towards an inorganic being. It’s a very strange but not unpleasant feeling, making you feel kindly even towards inanimate objects. I hope you will take a glimpse into their (?) life.
Comment from Yoshimasa Hosoya (Voice of Mina):
When I read the original work, I was immediately drawn into its mysterious atmosphere. I am truly happy about the anime adaptation. I feel blessed to be involved in such a wonderful work…! Though Mina is supposed to be a robot that feels hard and emotionless when touched, I’ll do my best to convey her warmth and cuteness to everyone. Every character is truly charming, so please look forward to seeing everyone in motion!
