Hi everyone! If you love Japanese pop culture like me, you absolutely need to check out the amazing 日本の巨大ロボット群像 東京会場 (GIANT ROBOTS The Core of Japanese Mecha Anime) happening at Sunshine City in Ikebukuro! I went recently, and it was soooo cool! Imagine being surrounded by all the iconic mecha designs you’ve seen in anime—it was like a dream come true!
Upon entering the venue, you’re greeted with a journey through the history of Japan’s giant robot anime, starting with Tetsujin 28-go, the very first of its kind. The exhibit includes Getter Robo, Mazinger Z, and even the roots of Gundam with the Mobile Infantry concept from Studio Nue. It showcases the evolution from these beginnings to the life-sized Gundam and the modern iterations we see today, with illustrations, concept art, and design materials documenting the process.
There are also exclusive sections, like designs of scrapped robots and concept art that didn’t make the cut, though these are in photography-restricted areas. For robot fans, the exhibit offers an overwhelming amount of rare and fascinating information.
While this article highlights some of the exhibits, I highly recommend visiting the venue in Ikebukuro if you’re interested!
