It was announced on January 15th at a new original anime Aquatope will air in July 2021. Brought to us by the same studio that made Iroduku: The World in Colors, P.A. WORKS is producing this colorful yet bittersweet anime. On their website, they released some images and a teaser, so let’s check them out!
We are greeted with a beautiful beach of Okinawa and a sad soundtrack. Yes, this anime actually is supposed to take place in Okinawa. Scheduled to be released in July, this is a perfect seasonal anime. Unlike other Iroduku and other anime, P.A WORKS have produced, this series seems to be centered around just 2 girls. The trailer starts with one of the girls saying…
“I’m sorry mom, but I don’t want to go back.”
Definitely going to be a heartfelt, tearjerker anime if I’ve ever seen one.
The story will follow Kukuru Misakino and Fuuka Miyazawa. Kukuru is working an important role at a small Aquarium in Nanjo, Okinawa. She is straight to the point, energetic, and loves animals. One day she meets Fuuka, a struggling idle who ran away from the concrete jungle of Tokyo to find her place. Fuuka is calmer but is a hard worker and cares for others. The two get to know each other in the aquarium. However, one day the aquarium is in danger of closing down for good. The main characters try to help the facility and with it, grow as a person while doing so.
What will happen to the aquarium?? Let’s find out.

On the website, there is also a section to read the voice actor’s comments on the project. Let me take this time to show a little bit of what they wrote.
From Rikako Aida (as: Fuuka Miyazawa)
“Because this is an original anime, even us voice actors can’t tell what’s going to happen next. Fuuka is a girl who wants to help others. That’s what I really like about her.”
From Miku Ito Aida (as: Kukuru Misakino)
“The setting of this series is very realistic and makes you want to root for them. Kukuru is such a strong character, she’s so cool and I love it!”
