Information about the “Jujutsu Kaisen” Series

Overview of “Jujutsu Kaisen”

Satoru Gojo appears in “Jujutsu Kaisen”, a battle manga that began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2018, preceded by its prequel, “Tokyo Metropolitan Magic Technical High School”, serialized in Jump GIGA in 2017. The series, themed around jujutsu, mainly portrays the battles between jujutsu sorcerers and Curses, which are born from human negative emotions. The creator, Gege Akutami, had published several one-shots before “Jujutsu Kaisen” became their first serialized work.

Initially, the series had a lukewarm reception due to its dark theme, but it eventually gained popularity through its fast-paced style and a cast of unique characters. The media mix development, especially the anime adaptation broadcasted in 2020, significantly boosted its popularity. Apart from being adapted into an anime, it has also been made into games, stage adaptations, and other forms of media.

Synopsis of “Jujutsu Kaisen”

Yuji Itadori, a high school student living in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, possesses extraordinary physical abilities. On the night his adoptive grandfather passes away, a cursed object kept at his school is unsealed, releasing Curses. Itadori, together with Megumi Fushiguro, who arrived to collect the cursed object, ends up fighting the Curses at their school. Satoru Gojo, the focus of this article, makes his entrance in this scenario.

Profile of Satoru Gojo

Satoru Gojo is a teacher for the first-year students at the Tokyo Metropolitan Magic Technical High School. He is the current head of the Gojo family, one of the three great families in the world of jujutsu, and one of only four Special Grade jujutsu sorcerers in Japan. Among Special Grade sorcerers, he boasts exceptionally high combat abilities and is universally acknowledged as the strongest sorcerer in modern times. Gojo has an elusive personality, often provoking and angering his opponents. While being the strongest, he also has a strong interest in nurturing the next generation, which is why he works as a teacher at the high school.

Gojo, despite being from the prestigious Gojo family of the jujutsu world, has a distinctive appearance that does not fit the typical Japanese image: white hair, blue eyes, and a tall stature reaching 190cm. Although he appears slim, as a jujutsu sorcerer, he has a well-trained body that forms an inverted triangle shape when undressed, revealing a surprisingly muscular physique. He possesses the “Six Eyes”, a special ability that allows him to perceive cursed energy, and the “Limitless” curse technique, a traditional art of the Gojo family, making him the most powerful in terms of abilities.

Why Was Satoru Gojo Unsealed? Which Chapter Features His Resurrection Scene?

The Circumstances Leading Up to Satoru Gojo’s Sealing

First, let’s review the events leading up to the sealing of Satoru Gojo. The pivotal moment that led to Gojo’s sealing occurred in Chapter 91, included in Volume 11. This event marks the beginning of the Shibuya Incident, which started unfolding in Chapter 83 of Volume 10. Gojo was assigned to handle the situation in Shibuya alone, as designated by the opposition, led by the fake Suguru Geto. In Shibuya, Gojo engages in combat with special grade cursed spirits like Hanami, Jogo, and Mahito.

Despite being the strongest modern sorcerer, Gojo found himself exhausted by Mahito’s use of modified humans. Unexpectedly, the Prison Realm appears at Gojo’s feet. His instincts telling him of the danger, Gojo tries to distance himself but is then confronted by his former friend and, as of last year, his own victim, Suguru Geto.

Although his brain denies it, Gojo, with his Six Eyes, realizes that this is not an illusion. The recollection of his high school days and other memories fulfill the activation condition of the Prison Realm: “one minute of the target’s brain time,” resulting in Gojo’s sealing. However, Gojo doesn’t get sealed without a fight, leaving fake Geto unable to move the Prison Realm for some time.

The Duration of Satoru Gojo’s Sealing

As mentioned earlier, Gojo was sealed in Chapter 91, included in Volume 11, which was published in the August 3, 2020 issue of Weekly Shonen Jump. The scene depicting Gojo’s unsealing and resurrection was drawn in the April 24, 2023 issue of Weekly Shonen Jump, combined 21-22 issue. In real time, this means Gojo was sealed for almost three years, spanning several volumes.

To be precise, a total of 1,190 days had passed. During this time, Gojo was not depicted in the main story but only appeared in flashback scenes. Interestingly, these approximate three years in the real world translate to only 19 days passing in the timeline of Jujutsu Kaisen from the point of Gojo’s sealing to his unsealing.

Which Volume and Chapter of the Original Manga Depict Satoru Gojo’s Unsealing and Resurrection?

The scene of Satoru Gojo’s unsealing and resurrection was published in Weekly Shonen Jump in April 2023. This scene is included in Chapter 221, which is part of Volume 25. As of December 2023, Volume 25 has not been released yet and is scheduled to be published in January 2024.

The Reason Behind Satoru Gojo’s Unsealing and Resurrection

After Satoru Gojo was sealed, Yuji Itadori and others first worked on resolving the Shibuya Incident. Later, during the Culling Game organized by Kenjaku, they started to work towards Gojo’s resurrection. In their quest, they meet with Tengen, who informs them about how to unseal Gojo.

First, it’s revealed that the Prison Realm has a front and a back, with the latter being in Tengen’s possession. However, the authority to open the back lies with Kenjaku, the owner of the front, making it difficult to unseal. Tengen proposes three methods to open the back of the Prison Realm. Unfortunately, two of these methods were not viable, as Gojo had either destroyed or sealed them in the past. Yuji Itadori and his group then consider the remaining method, which involves seeking the cooperation of the character known as “Angel.”

Over the course of several chapters and events of the Culling Game unfolding in various locations, Yuji Itadori and his team eventually find Angel and successfully secure her cooperation. This collaboration leads to the successful unsealing of Satoru Gojo.

What Happened After Satoru Gojo’s Seal Was Broken?

The Scene Immediately After the Seal Was Broken

The unsealing of Satoru Gojo took place at the Fourth Training Ground of Jujutsu High in Saitama Prefecture, where no danger could spread to others. This was because Yuji Itadori and the others were concerned about Gojo’s mental state. With Angel’s technique, the barrier on the back of the Prison Realm was to be lifted. However, for some reason, Gojo did not emerge from the back of the Prison Realm. This led to a moment where Itadori and others worriedly questioned Angel, wondering if they had accidentally erased Gojo in the process.

However, it wasn’t Angel’s doing. Kenjaku, who had absorbed Tengen and was aware of the Prison Realm’s existence, had taken countermeasures. Kenjaku had made it so that even if the back of the Prison Realm was opened, Gojo would come out from the front. Moreover, he had sealed the front of the Prison Realm at a depth of 8,000 meters in the Japan Trench, betting that the water pressure would kill Gojo.

Satoru Gojo’s Power After Being Unsealed

Ultimately, Kenjaku’s plan failed. As he had orchestrated, Gojo did emerge from the front. However, Gojo used the Reverse Cursed Technique to repair his body and withstand the water pressure. Then, using the Cursed Technique Reversal “Blue,” he appeared before Kenjaku.

Even Kenjaku couldn’t hide his surprise at this development. The implication was that since the seal was broken elsewhere, Itadori and his team couldn’t witness Gojo’s resurrection firsthand.

However, they had a way to sense it. Right after Angel lifted the seal on the Prison Realm, an earthquake originated off the coast of Japan. This tremor was caused by Gojo breaking out of the seal. After being sealed for about three years in the story, Gojo returned, showcasing his strength immediately in his resurrection scene.

As for why Gojo headed straight to Kenjaku, it was to defeat him and finally mourn Geto’s death properly. However, the showdown was postponed when Sukuna, inhabiting Megumi Fushiguro’s body, appeared. Since Sukuna and Gojo both had matters to attend to before their fight, their plans aligned. They agreed to postpone their decisive battle to December 24th, Geto’s death anniversary, and then parted ways.

The Battle Between Satoru Gojo and Sukuna Begins

After his seal was broken, Satoru Gojo immediately headed towards Kenjaku, but the appearance of Sukuna led to a temporary disbandment. Gojo’s goal is not only to defeat Sukuna but also to rescue Megumi Fushiguro. Although Gojo thinks Fushiguro’s situation can be handled later, his immediate focus is on putting all his efforts into defeating Sukuna. This battle has sparked various speculations among the readers.

There are several possibilities: Gojo could win, or Sukuna could come out victorious. There’s also the chance of intervention from a third party. At least, from the Jujutsu Sorcerers’ side, the expectation is placed on Gojo, and they resort to using a technique to remotely observe the battle between the two. While there was speculation that Gojo might have been weakened by his prolonged sealing, it turned out that he was able to fight at full strength once the battle commenced.

Did Satoru Gojo Die in His Battle with Sukuna? Spoilers on the Outcome of the Battle

Did Satoru Gojo Die as a Result of His Fight with Sukuna?

In the battle against Sukuna, who had taken over the body of Megumi Fushiguro, Sukuna utilized the Ten Shadows Technique and its ultimate move, Maka Varna. The fight between these two spanned several chapters, showcasing a high level of combat. However, in the end, Sukuna’s strategy using Maka Varna proved effective, leading to Satoru Gojo’s death.

In Which Chapter and Volume Did Satoru Gojo Die?

Satoru Gojo’s death is depicted in Chapter 236. Although it’s unclear in which volume this chapter will be included, it is speculated that it might be in Volume 27, considering Volume 26 likely includes up to Chapter 235. Until Chapter 235, the battle seemed to be in Gojo’s favor.

In Chapter 236, the opening scene is set in an airport-like location, where Gojo and Suguru Geto reunite. Gojo discusses his battle with Sukuna, and characters like Principal Yaga, Riko Amanai, and Misato Kuroi are also depicted. These are characters who have died either within the timeline of Jujutsu Kaisen or in the past. Then, as the scene shifts back to reality, Gojo is shown to be bisected at the waist.

How Sukuna Defeated Satoru Gojo

Although the battle was depicted as being in Gojo’s favor until Chapter 235, Chapter 236 reveals how Sukuna managed to defeat him. Sukuna, using Megumi Fushiguro’s body and the Maka Varna, fought to demonstrate how to adapt to it. Maka Varna has the ability to adapt to any phenomenon. Moreover, its adaptation isn’t a one-time event; once one adaptation is complete, it attempts to adapt using other methods.

Against Gojo, Maka Varna’s first adaptation was “alteration of its own cursed energy.” Sukuna found it challenging to imitate this and waited for the next adaptation. The second adaptation involved “expanding the scope of the technique’s target.” Maka Varna expanded its target to space and the world itself, adapting to counter Gojo. Despite the difficulty, Sukuna successfully imitated this approach and managed to cut Gojo along with the space itself.

The Reason Why Gojo Satoru Chose December 24th for the Confrontation with Sukuna

Satoru Gojo unilaterally decided on December 24th as the date for the showdown with Sukuna. Sukuna accepted this, setting a period of approximately one month from Gojo’s revival to the actual confrontation. While postponing the fight was one thing, many have wondered why he extended it so far. Gojo mentioned, “It would be troublesome to have two death anniversaries.”

The “death anniversary” here is believed to refer to his close friend Suguru Geto, who was killed by Gojo a year earlier and whose body is now possessed by Kenjaku. Essentially, Gojo’s reasoning implies that after defeating Sukuna, he would also take down Kenjaku, thereby freeing Geto’s body, hence the reference to two death anniversaries. However, this alone is not seen as sufficient reason for the one-month delay.

One theory about why Gojo extended the date of the final battle by over a month is that he wanted time to prepare for the fight with Sukuna. It’s easy to forget that at this point, Gojo had just been revived from his seal and had returned from the Japan Trench using Reverse Cursed Technique to heal himself. It is speculated that it wouldn’t be surprising if he needed some time to fully recover his physical condition.
