Information on the second installment of “Gin Tama on Theater 2D,” an event screening that re-edits popular long episodes of the TV anime, is also available!

The “Gin Tama SOUND ULTRA SOUL! ’24” held on February 11, 2024, was packed with highlights, including powerful live performances, dramatic readings by the cast, and the unveiling of new information about the “Gin Tama 20th Anniversary Project.” This report will focus mainly on the daytime performance of the two shows held.

Originally announced in 2020, the eagerly awaited performance of “Gin Tama SOUND ULTRA SOUL!” was restarted after being canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This live event, which featured a unique focus on the “soundtrack = background music (BGM)” used in the drama, while also featuring the cast of Yorozuya, filled the venue with anticipation. Suddenly, as the chime sounded, the familiar exterior cut of Yorozuya from the anime “Gin Tama” appeared on the monitor. A BG-only segment narrated by the Yorozuya cast began, mixing current topics into their dialogue and immersing the audience in the world of “Gin Tama.” The first performance connected from the BG-only dialogue was the unexpected “Shall I Turn You Into a Sugar Doll Too?!” The live performance added sharpness and weight, turning it into a hellish heavy metal piece that filled the venue with an end-of-the-century feel, driving the audience’s excitement to a climax.

Next, “DJ Otose,” also known as Mikako Takahashi (Sadaharu / Terakado Tsuu’s voice), appeared on stage with Elizabeth. Warm-up talks mixed with Otose’s language and call & response heated up the venue, followed by the introduction of the Yorozuya members: Tomokazu Sugita (Gintoki Sakata), Daisuke Sakaguchi (Shinpachi Shimura), and Rie Kugimiya (Kagura) onto the stage. The event progressed with an explanation involving the special band “Gin Tama ULTRA BAND Meets Audio High” formed by Audio Highs, who has consistently handled the soundtrack of “Gin Tama” since its broadcast. It was revealed that the setlist for the event would mainly consist of the top 10 songs selected from the “Gin Tama ULTRA BAND Meets Audio Highs Play Your Favorite Songs! Big Request!!” survey.

And so, the countdown began! However, in true “Gin Tama” fashion, the event kicked off with a twist by playing “Subtitle, You Bastard” as rank 10.5, showcasing the show’s characteristic freedom and humor right from the start. Following this unconventional opening, not only were the ranked songs performed, but memorable soundtracks from various long arcs, such as “Soredemo Dachikou,” were played in a medley. The event also featured “I am Shock” sung by vocal singman (with NORISTRY performing “How Many Times! Gintaman” in the evening part) among other diverse musical numbers celebrating 20 years of “Gin Tama.” Additionally, dramatic readings by the Yorozuya cast and the first-ever live band performance “Otose-chan Unplugged Live” provided a variety of content alongside the powerful live music, further heating up the audience’s excitement.

As the countdown neared its climax and the stage darkened for the announcement of the top-ranked song, a chime rang out across the venue, followed by Gintoki’s voice saying, “Alright, everyone, take your seats!” This led to the announcement of new settings for “3rd Year Class Z Ginpachi-sensei,” set to air on TV Tokyo and other networks in 2025, under the witty banter of Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura, including live voice acting by the characters as a surprise, which elicited loud cheers and laughter from the audience. The conversation then shifted to new information about the “Gin Tama 20th Anniversary Project,” with the next event screening title to be decided during this event, following “Gin Tama on Theater 2D Shinsengumi Crisis Arc.” Despite intentions to base the title on the anime’s timeline, the final four candidates all sounded suspiciously like titles from other works, leading to the decision being postponed to the evening session. It was later officially announced that “Courtesan of a Nation Arc,” covering anime episodes 257 to 261, would be screened as “Gin Tama on Theater 2D Shinsengumi Crisis Arc” in June, wrapping the venue in applause and joy for the opportunity to watch one of the most emotional episodes in theaters.

The top spot was awarded to a song that could well be considered the anthem of “Gin Tama”: “You Guys!! Are You Still Following Gin Tama?!” The cast’s encouragement led to an overwhelming response from the audience, and the solo parts performed by the band members elicited particularly loud cheers, showcasing the unique thrill of live performances. The event concluded with all the setlists finished, wrapped up by DJ Otose’s “Ultra Soul!” call and response, marking the end of the first-ever soundtrack live event for “Gin Tama” amidst laughter and warmth.

Announcements during the event included the launch of a collaboration wireless earphone tuned by Audio Highs, and the “Gin Tama Exhibition: Gathering at Twenty” to be held in winter 2024, featuring a new voting project, highlighting the unstoppable momentum of “Gin Tama” even in its 20th year. With the anime’s 20th anniversary in 2026, the ongoing “Gin Tama 20th Anniversary Project” promises exciting developments to look forward to.
