A bald magician with a unique aura. Learn about his abilities, his relationships with party members Edel and Dunst, and his encounters in the second exam.
Briar, a bald magician in “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End,” forms a party with Edel and Dunst during the first-class mage exam. Known for his enigmatic aura, his strength and abilities are topics of fan discussions.
Edel in “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” is a female second-class mage who teams up with Briar during the first exam. During the second exam, she is attacked by Zenz’s replica, realizing these replicas lack “hearts,” but she herself is injured and disqualified.
On the other hand, Dunst, a distinguished male mage with a prominent beard, joins Briar’s party during the first exam. He too faces attacks from Zenz’s replicas but manages to survive and relay information to the remaining members, although he is disqualified after the third exam.
In “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End,” various mages with unique abilities are introduced. What abilities does Briar possess? His primary equipment is a staff with an “E”-shaped tip, capable of defensive magic that forms a hexagonal barrier to block attacks. However, due to high mana consumption, it can only be used for a short time.
Additionally, he can unleash flames from his staff, as seen when melting a frozen lake created by Ravine. Despite these abilities, his combat scenes are limited, and his true strength remains undisclosed. Defeated by Zenz’s replica during the second exam, it suggests his abilities might be of a lower level.
■ Scene 1: First-Class Mage Exam (First Test)
Briar, along with Edel and Dunst, formed a party and faced the first exam. A notable moment was when he released flames from his staff to melt a frozen lake. Apart from that, there were no significant scenes. He only appears briefly in Volume 5, Chapter 45, attempting to capture Stille.
■ Scene 2: First-Class Mage Exam (Second Test)
Continuing their alliance from the first test, Briar, Edel, and Dunst faced the challenges of the second exam together. They encountered replicas created by Zenz’s mirror demon and were forced to flee as fighting head-on was futile. Briar sacrificed himself to hold off the replicas, allowing Dunst to escape, but he failed the exam.
■ Scene 3: After the First-Class Mage Exam
Briar’s fate after the first exam remains unknown, with no further scenes depicting his actions. It’s uncertain whether he safely escaped the second exam or perished. His courageous act of sacrificing himself to aid Dunst reflects his bravery and selflessness. With his fate left uncertain, the likelihood of Briar making a reappearance is considered low.
Shin’ya Takahashi voiced Briar in “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.” He was motivated to pursue voice acting after feeling a sense of emptiness when his favorite series ended, aspiring to become part of the anime world himself. Following the closure of his previous agency, Pro-Fit, at the end of March 2022, he transferred to Racoon Dog.
In 2008, he secured his first regular role as Noriaki Iizuna in the TV anime “Kure-nai.” Apart from TV anime roles, he has been active in various fields such as drama CDs, games, and movie dubbing. Additionally, he announced his marriage during the wrap party of the anime “Assassination Classroom” in 2015.
Briar in “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” is a mage who took the first-class mage exam. With a distinct appearance of a bald head and a chin beard, Briar possesses a calm and composed demeanor. While his abilities and strengths remain unknown, he’s speculated to be of lower rank among mages. Unlike other dropouts from the second exam, Briar doesn’t have a scene showing his escape, leaving his fate shrouded in mystery. Keep an eye out for Briar, a character with many unanswered questions.
