Tokyo Ghoul EX: Must-See 10th Anniversary Immersive Event

Events

A “immersive experience” exhibition that allows fans to relive the world of the TV anime “Tokyo Ghoul,” which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, will open in October at Terada Warehouse in Shinagawa. Highlights of the event, including newly drawn illustrations and the latest technology allowing visitors to experience the “Kaneki vs. Yamori Battle,” have been revealed.

The “Tokyo Ghoul” series is a dark fantasy work by Sui Ishida that began serialization in Weekly Young Jump in 2011 and has become a hugely popular series with over 47 million copies sold worldwide. The anime adaptation, which began airing in 2014, was supervised by Sui Ishida and gained popularity, including the second cour, “Root A,” which concluded differently from the original manga. It depicts the struggles of Kaneki, who becomes a half-ghoul after receiving an organ transplant from an unknown race of human-eating creatures called “ghouls,” which infest Tokyo.

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the TV anime, a large-scale exhibition titled “Tokyo Ghoul EX.” will be held from Monday, October 21, 2024, to Sunday, December 1, 2024, at Terada Warehouse in Tokyo, and from Saturday, December 14, 2024, to Sunday, December 29, 2024, at Grand Green Osaka in Osaka. Attendees will receive specially designed goods by Sui Ishida, which will be announced at a later date.

The first highlights of the exhibition announced include an immersive theater where visitors can feel the vibrations of one of the most iconic battles in the series, the production process of the “Kaneki Mask,” which will be on display, and newly drawn illustrations by character designers Kazuhiro Miwa and Atsuko Nakajima. Let’s dive in and take a look.

Kaneki vs. Yamori Immersive Theater

In Kaneki’s hazy mental world, created by Yamori’s torture, Rize appears as a phantom. Through their dialogue, Kaneki awakens, skillfully wielding his kagune to overpower Yamori—a battle that has become a legendary scene in anime history. This iconic fight will be revived at the exhibition using the latest technology. The combination of powerful images projected on multiple surfaces in the exhibition space and haptic technology, which simulates tactile sensations by vibrating the floor, will provide an immersive experience that goes beyond just watching the visuals.

The information about the exhibition area includes a warning that “Only humans are allowed,” ensuring visitors that there is no danger of being attacked by ghouls.

Kaneki’s Mask Production Process

At the exhibition, the black mask worn by Kaneki in the series will be brought to life in a three-dimensional form. In conjunction with this, the exhibition will showcase the valuable production process, including the release of 3D data used to create the mask.

Twelve New Illustrations on Display

In addition to the three newly drawn illustrations revealed in the key visual, twelve more illustrations by Kazuhiro Miwa and Atsuko Nakajima, the character designers for the anime, have been newly unveiled. At the venue, over 100 original goods, including items featuring these illustrations, will be available for purchase. Details about the merchandise will be announced at a later date.

Made-to-Order Goods Included with Admission Ticket

Additionally, made-to-order admission tickets, which come with a complete pin set featuring these newly drawn illustrations as a bonus, will be available for purchase. This special admission ticket includes entry to the exhibition, a serial-numbered complete pin set, and a key visual diorama. Applications for this special ticket are open until Monday, August 12.

This large-scale exhibition held in Tokyo, as indicated in the title, promises to be an unmissable event for fans.
