This event has ended. The Final Ceremony took place on 29 August 2026, and the statue itself came down on 31 August 2026. The report below is kept as a record of the event.
After almost nine years standing watch over Odaiba, the life-size Unicorn Gundam statue at DiverCity Tokyo Plaza is saying goodbye. On Saturday, August 29, the statue’s operators held a Final Ceremony to send it off in style — and we were lucky enough to be there for it.
A Landmark Since 2017
The statue first went on display in September 2017 at the DiverCity Tokyo Plaza Festival Square, and quickly became one of Odaiba’s most photographed spots — its transformation gimmick between Unicorn Mode and Destroy Mode, and its glowing psycho-frame, drew fans from Japan and overseas alike. Since June this year the statue had been wearing its final look, the “RX-0 Unicorn Gundam Ver. TWC FINAL” with new markings by character designer Hajime Katoki, and from August 22 a special wall-projection show called UNICORN GUNDAM Statue — BEYOND POSSIBILITY — had been running alongside it.
MC duty for the ceremony went to voice actor Genki Okawa, who opened the night with a look back at the wider history of Japan’s full-scale Gundam statues — starting with the original RX-78-2 that stood in Odaiba’s Shiokaze Park back in 2009 and drew something like 4.15 million visitors, all the way through to the statues that later appeared in Fukuoka, Shanghai, and Osaka.
A couple of details from the trivia segment stood out. Assembling the statue on site reportedly took about two and a half months, slowed by heavy rain. And the “TWC” in its current name, “Ver. TWC FINAL,” stands for Tokyo Waterfront City — the district the statue has stood in this whole time. Asked why the psycho-frame glows the way it does, Okawa borrowed a line straight from the show and told the crowd, “Even we don’t know” — which got a solid laugh.
Sawano Hiroyuki × SennaRin: A Live Set to Remember
The emotional centerpiece of the night was a special live performance from composer Hiroyuki Sawano and vocalist SennaRin — the duo behind the music of Mobile Suit Gundam UC, Gundam NT, and Gundam: Hathaway. Performing under a rain-speckled tent just steps from the statue, they played “yet.,” SennaRin’s Japanese-lyric version of the UC insert song “Sternengesang,” followed by “ENDROLL” from Hathaway.
The best part: the statue’s psycho-frame panels shifted color in sync with the music the whole time, while footage from UC played across the DiverCity building behind the stage. For a few songs, it genuinely felt like standing inside the show.
They closed with a specially rearranged version of the statue’s own theme song, “Cage enD” — and that’s when things got quietly emotional. Sawano called scoring for UC and the statue “something he’s genuinely grateful for,” while SennaRin spoke about what the statue and the series have meant to her.
One Last Surprise
Just when it seemed like the ceremony was winding down, the ending video played one more twist: newly recorded farewell messages from Koki Uchiyama (the voice of Banagher Links) and Ryo Hirohashi (the voice of Haro). Between that and the fireworks that lit up right behind the statue as the closing footage wrapped, there wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd — you could hear people all around shouting “arigatou” up at the statue itself.
