In “Jujutsu Kaisen,” there is a character named Yuki Tsukumo, a mysterious sorcerer who has sparked speculations of being the mastermind behind certain events. This article aims to shed light on Yuki Tsukumo’s true identity and objectives within the world of “Jujutsu Kaisen.” To begin, let’s explore some background information about “Jujutsu Kaisen” and then delve into Yuki Tsukumo’s profile, strengths, and jujutsu techniques.
“Jujutsu Kaisen” is a manga series serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump. Currently, up to volume 24 of the manga has been released, and the series has surpassed 80 million copies in cumulative print. Additionally, in 2020, the first season of the television anime was broadcast, and as of July 2023, the second season is airing.
The story begins with high school student Yuji Itadori discovering a cursed object known as “Sukuna’s Finger” at his school. When the seal on Sukuna’s Finger is broken, curses start to manifest in the school. Yuji Itadori, in order to gain the power to combat curses, swallows the finger, becoming the vessel for Sukuna. As a result, he is sentenced to death by the Jujutsu Sorcerer world. However, he is saved from immediate execution thanks to Satoru Gojo, a Jujutsu Sorcerer, and is instead transferred to Jujutsu High School. From there, he embarks on a new life as a Jujutsu Sorcerer.
Yuki Tsukumo in “Jujutsu Kaisen” is a tall sorcerer with long blond hair. She has a hobby of riding large motorcycles and is often seen traveling on one. Her favorite food is chicken burritos, while she dislikes seafood. She doesn’t get along with Jujutsu High School and often escapes from her missions to travel the world.
In “Jujutsu Kaisen,” Yuki Tsukumo is considered to be on par with Satoru Gojo, who is regarded as the strongest in the series. Due to the limited number of combat scenes featuring her in the story, her true strength remains somewhat uncertain. However, her ability is undeniable, as she nearly cornered Sukuna’s vessel, Yuji Itadori, during their battle.
Yuki Tsukumo is known to use a jutsu called “Bombay,” which grants her virtual mass. This jutsu complements her proficiency in martial arts. During her battle with Sukuna’s vessel, she used “Bombay” to create a black hole. Additionally, Yuki Tsukumo is capable of using Reversal Cursed Technique. While it was suggested that she might be proficient in Domain Expansion during her conversation with Geto, she ultimately did not use Domain Expansion.
During the era when a Star Plasma Vessel was meant to assimilate with Tengen, it was a high school girl named Amanai Riko who was chosen for this role. Satoru Gojo and Geto Suguru, who were still students at Jujutsu High School at the time, were assigned to protect Amanai Riko, who was being targeted for her life. Although Gojo and Geto reluctantly accepted the mission, they were determined to protect Amanai Riko until the day of assimilation. In the final showdown with an assassin named Jiro Awasaka, while Gojo held him at bay, Geto Suguru escorted Amanai Riko to the Hoshiguma Shrine, where Tengen resided.
At the shrine, Amanai Riko resisted assimilation with Tengen and, along with Geto Suguru, attempted to return home. However, in front of Geto Suguru, Amanai Riko was fatally shot in the head by Jiro Awasaka and died. Tengen’s opportunity to assimilate with a Star Plasma Vessel was lost with her death since the vessel needed to be alive for the process to succeed. Without assimilation, Tengen could not halt his aging process.
Strangely, even after Amanai Riko’s death, Tengen remained stable. It turns out that Yuki Tsukumo somehow knew about this fact. When she met Geto Suguru, Yuki Tsukumo remarked, “Whether there was a new Star Plasma Vessel or a new one was born, in any case, Tengen is stable.” From this dialogue, it becomes evident that Yuki Tsukumo has some form of connection or knowledge related to Tengen and his situation.
When the true identity of Kukuri Yūki was still shrouded in mystery, she led Yūji Itadori and others to Hōraijima. However, Tengen did not appear before Kukuri Yūki, and instead, a completely white room materialized. In this moment, Kukuri Yūki believed that she was being rejected by Tengen.
If Kukuri Yūki had no prior acquaintance with Tengen, she wouldn’t have reason to believe that she was the one being rejected. This scene strongly suggests that Kukuri Yūki had some kind of past connection with Tengen. In the following episode, Kukuri Yūki and the others finally come face to face with Tengen.
At that moment, Tengen clearly said to Kukuri Yūki, “This isn’t our first meeting.” This statement by Tengen confirmed that there was indeed a prior acquaintance between Tengen and Kukuri Yūki. This revelation led some fans to speculate that Kukuri Yūki’s true identity might not be a Star Plasma Vessel.
In Chapter 202 of Jujutsu Kaisen, the true identity of Yuki Tsukumo was finally revealed. In this chapter, Yuki Tsukumo herself mentions that she is a “former Cursed Corpse.” It becomes clear that the reason Yuki Tsukumo was so knowledgeable about Cursed Corpses and had a connection with Geto Suguru was that Yuki Tsukumo herself was a Cursed Corpse.
Furthermore, in Chapter 202 of Jujutsu Kaisen, it is revealed that there were other Cursed Corpses aside from Amanai Riko. However, these other Cursed Corpses did not have as high compatibility as Amanai Riko, leading to Tengen rejecting the assimilation. Yuki Tsukumo, who was previously a Cursed Corpse herself, could hear the voices of other Cursed Corpses. However, the voices she heard were those of Cursed Corpses who had assimilated with Tengen. Yuki Tsukumo had previously left a cryptic remark, saying, “No wonder the voices aren’t increasing.” These “voices” referred to the voices of the Cursed Corpses that had assimilated with Tengen.
Yuki Tsukumo’s ability to hear these voices allowed her to determine whether Tengen had assimilated with new Cursed Corpses or not. However, after the death of Amanai Riko, Yuki Tsukumo no longer heard the voice of a new Cursed Corpse. Yuki Tsukumo, who had initially suspected that Tengen had assimilated with a new Cursed Corpse, became puzzled by the absence of new voices. It was only after learning that Tengen had not assimilated with any more Cursed Corpses that Yuki Tsukumo understood why the voices had not increased.
Yuki Tsukumo is known for her globetrotting adventures and initially has minimal presence in the early parts of the story. What could have been her underlying motive for traveling around the world? Here, we will explore the purposes of Yuki Tsukumo, who is an ex-Star Plasma Vessel, and delve into theories regarding her potentially villainous role.”
・Yuki Tsukumo’s Goals
In the current jujutsu world, jujutsu sorcerers are believed to exist to exorcise curses that manifest in this world. At Jujutsu High School, where Yuji Itadori and others attend, students are taught how to exorcise curses as jujutsu sorcerers. However, Yuki Tsukumo believed this approach to be insufficient. She aspired to create a world where curses themselves wouldn’t be born. Yuki Tsukumo sought the means to achieve this goal, leading her to travel around the world.
・Goal 1: Optimization of Jujutsu Power
Yuki Tsukumo considered two methods to achieve her ultimate goal of “eliminating curses.” One of these methods was “the optimization of jujutsu power,” which essentially involved turning the entire human population into jujutsu sorcerers. Twelve years ago, Yuki Tsukumo primarily viewed the optimization of jujutsu power as the means to eliminate curses. Upon hearing this idea, Yuta Okkotsu, who was with her at the time, arrived at an extreme conclusion of “exterminating non-sorcerers” as the solution.
Yuki Tsukumo was aware that this was the simplest method to achieve her goal. However, she refrained from choosing this approach. At this point, the narrative doesn’t provide explicit details on how Yuki Tsukumo intended to carry out the optimization of jujutsu power. Conversely, Yuta Okkotsu became fixated on this idea and began taking steps toward the mass killing of non-sorcerers.
・Goal 2: Liberation from Jujutsu Power
Yuki Tsukumo had another method in mind to achieve her goal of eliminating curses, which was “liberation from jujutsu power.” This approach aimed to remove jujutsu power from the entire human population. If the underlying jujutsu power, which serves as the foundation for curses, were eradicated, curses would cease to exist. Yuki Tsukumo had her eyes on Yuji Fushiguro as a model for humans with absolutely no jujutsu power, but he refused to cooperate. Furthermore, Yuji Fushiguro was killed by Satoru Gojo.
The loss of Yuji Fushiguro caused Yuki Tsukumo to temporarily abandon her goal of liberation from jujutsu power. However, when she appeared during the Shibuya Incident, she expressed her intention to return to her original objective of liberating people from jujutsu power.
・Yuki Tsukumo’s Mastermind Theory
For a while, Yuki Tsukumo’s true identity remained a mystery, leading to the emergence of a mastermind theory. The notion that Yuki Tsukumo might be the mastermind in Jujutsu Kaisen began when her words prompted Yuta Okkotsu to fall into darkness. After hearing Yuki Tsukumo’s goals, Yuta Okkotsu became consumed by the idea of creating a world without non-sorcerers.
As a result, he fell into darkness and became a curse user. This led to speculation that Yuki Tsukumo might be the mastermind and intentionally manipulated Yuta Okkotsu. However, Yuki Tsukumo’s consistent desire to “eliminate curses from this world” makes it unlikely that she is a true mastermind.
・Did Yuki Tsukumo Die?
In Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuki Tsukumo met her demise during the battle against Jogo. Let’s take a closer look at the scene of Yuki Tsukumo’s death. Yuki Tsukumo remained with Tengen and Satoru Gojo to protect Tengen from Jogo’s onslaught. A confrontation ensued as Jogo attempted to attack the Star Religious Group.
Yuki Tsukumo, working in tandem with Satoru Gojo, put up a valiant fight against Jogo. However, she was ultimately sliced in half by Jogo. Even in her injured state, Yuki Tsukumo managed to generate a black hole using her own jujutsu technique. While Jogo evaded this attack unharmed, Yuki Tsukumo chose to self-destruct, disappearing from the scene.
Related Character #1: Aoi Todo
Aoi Todo is a student at Kyoto Jujutsu High School in Jujutsu Kaisen. He has a habit of asking people about their type as a first meeting greeting, which was originally Yuki Tsukumo’s catchphrase. When Todo was a young child, he coincidentally met Yuki Tsukumo and became her disciple.
Under Yuki Tsukumo’s tutelage, Aoi Todo was greatly influenced, adopting not only her catchphrase but also a combat style focused on martial arts and even similar vibes in the names of his techniques. In the series, there are scenes where Aoi Todo uses the simple domain he learned from his mentor, Yuki Tsukumo.
Related Character #2: Suguru Geto
In Jujutsu Kaisen, Suguru Geto and Yuki Tsukumo don’t share a particularly close relationship. They met and had a conversation once, but Yuki Tsukumo had a significant influence on Suguru Geto’s beliefs and actions. When Suguru Geto met Yuki Tsukumo, he was struggling with his identity as a jujutsu sorcerer.
Unaware of Suguru Geto’s inner turmoil, Yuki Tsukumo unintentionally shared a method to eliminate curses from the world with him. Hearing Yuki Tsukumo’s words, Suguru Geto realized that if non-sorcerers ceased to exist in the world, curses would no longer be born. This revelation led Suguru Geto, who had already harbored a deep resentment towards non-sorcerers, to desire a world where they no longer existed. Ultimately, he became a curse user and pursued a plan to exterminate non-sorcerers.
・Character Related #3: Raru
Raru in Jujutsu Kaisen was originally part of Suguru Geto’s group of curse users. He joined Geto’s faction because he deeply admired Suguru Geto. However, after Suguru Geto’s death, Raru distanced himself from the Geto faction. Later on, it becomes apparent that Raru is now working alongside Yuki Tsukumo. The exact circumstances that led Raru to become a member of Yuki Tsukumo’s group are not entirely clear.
Here’s a summary of Yuki Tsukumo’s identity, objectives, and speculations about being a mastermind in Jujutsu Kaisen:
Yuki Tsukumo, a character in Jujutsu Kaisen, initially appeared as a mysterious figure with an unknown identity. However, it was later revealed that she was an ex-Star Plasma Vessel.
