Most Akihabara guides list shops without telling you how they connect. This is a walkable route that hits the main buildings in order, with realistic timings.

The Route

This route stays inside a roughly 500-metre stretch — everything is within walking distance, and most of it is within Radio Kaikan or a five-minute walk of it.

Stop 1: Radio Kaikan (from the station)

Exit the station at the Electric Town Exit. Radio Kaikan is directly in front of you — about a one-minute walk. With ten floors of tenants, this alone can take an hour if you go through Card Labo, Yellow Submarine, K-BOOKS, Kotobukiya and Kaiyodo. Moving between floors, the lifts get a queue; the escalators are often faster for one or two floors.

Stop 2: Mandarake Complex

From Radio Kaikan, walk toward the main street — under five minutes to Mandarake Complex. Eight floors of second-hand goods; the tax-free counter is on 2F.

Stop 3: Suruga-ya (directly across the street)

Suruga-ya’s main store is about one minute from Mandarake, on the same street. Worth comparing prices directly since the stock overlaps.

From Here: Two Directions

  • Toward Hareruya (Magic/Pokémon cards) — about 5 minutes from Suruga-ya
  • Toward Kotobukiya (figures) — about 3 minutes from Suruga-ya

Pick one based on what you’re after — both are short enough to add without derailing the rest of the day.

Stop 4: Gachapon Kaikan

From Mandarake, Gachapon Kaikan is under 5 minutes on foot. A good place to end — it’s inexpensive and works as a wind-down after several hours of shopping.

Timings

Realistic timings, based on what we covered:

  • Radio Kaikan (multiple floors): 45–60 minutes
  • Mandarake Complex: 30–45 minutes if you’re browsing several floors
  • Suruga-ya: 20–30 minutes
  • Hareruya or Kotobukiya: 15–20 minutes
  • Gachapon Kaikan: 15 minutes

Total walking time between stops is under 15 minutes. The variable is how long you linger inside each building — Radio Kaikan and Mandarake are both large enough to lose an hour in without noticing.

Where to Take a Break

There’s no single obvious break point on this route — it’s dense with shops rather than built around a plaza. The simplest option is to duck into a café or convenience store between Suruga-ya and your next stop; nothing on this route requires more than a five-minute detour to find one.

Before You Go

This route assumes you start and end at Akihabara Station’s Electric Town Exit. Total walking time between stops is under 15 minutes — the time sink is inside the shops, not between them.

Mandarake’s tax-free counter is on 2F; bring your passport if you’re buying there. Radio Kaikan’s lifts queue up, so use the escalators when you’re only moving one or two floors.
